This is an intriguing question because it's sometimes like asking how long is a piece of string. The answer varies depending on numerous factors, but let’s break it down and give it some structure.
As your business grows, what I've found from my experience is that your needs evolve. So, initially, when starting a business, if you're extremely limited on capital, you should bootstrap it like crazy.
Let me share a bit of my journey. When I started the business I owned prior to VirtualStaff.ph, I did a lot of stuff myself. Yes, even the stuff I was terrible at and the stuff I hated doing. Now, ordinarily, this would be commendable—good old Mike rolling his sleeves up and playing in the dirt, haha.
But here’s the truth: I made a mistake, a mistake that is easily avoidable.
At the time, I thought I needed thousands of pounds a month (I was in the UK at the time) to hire semi-decent people to work for my startup. Like most startups, I was afraid of draining my capital without even reaching the break-even point.
My mistake was not realizing that you could build virtual teams overseas at wallet-friendly prices. This realization changed everything for me. It’s why later in life I dedicated myself to building VirtualStaff.ph. I knew there were a bunch of entrepreneurs out there who could also supercharge their startups by leveraging overseas talent in the Philippines.
So, to answer the question, I'd recommend outsourcing as soon as possible. Start small with a single virtual assistant who can multitask, then gradually hire specialized virtual staff as you gain traction.
Starting with a virtual assistant allows you to offload some of the routine tasks that consume your time. Whether it’s managing your emails, handling customer service, or even doing basic bookkeeping, a virtual assistant can be a game-changer. This frees you up to focus on the core aspects of your business—strategizing, innovating, and scaling.
As you grow and your needs become more specific, you can hire specialized virtual staff. These can include marketing experts, graphic designers, web developers, or any other role that your business requires. The key is to build a team that complements your strengths and fills in your weaknesses.
Now, it's important to build strong relationships with your virtual assistants. Trust and communication are vital to ensuring that your team functions effectively, even if you’re not in the same physical location.
Remember, outsourcing isn’t just about saving money. It’s about leveraging global talent to make your business more efficient and scalable. The earlier you start, the sooner you can focus on what really matters—growing your business.
So, my advice? Don’t wait until you’re overwhelmed with tasks. As soon as you have a clear vision of what tasks can be delegated, start outsourcing. You’ll be amazed at how much more you can achieve when you have the right team in place.
Until next time, keep pushing the boundaries and stay ahead of the game.
